Fire presents chance to explore Glacier's quieter side - Great Falls Tribune

For Karra Jordre, Many Glacier is the most spectacular part of Glacier National Park. She knows that’s saying a lot, because all of Glacier is awe inspiring. “To me, personally, I find Many Glacier to be the most beautiful area of the park as far as the mountains are concerned,” Jordre said. Many Glacier has long been a favorite camping destination for her family. Most of her favorite hikes are also located in the valley. While the Going-to-the-Sun Road corridor is by far the most popular area of Glacier, there is more to see in the park. With the east side of that busy road closed by the Reynolds Creek fire, now is a great time to explore some of Glacier’s less-visited corners. The Reynolds Creek fire is burning on about 3,000 acres, which leaves the vast majority of the 1-million-acre park unaffected by the fire. With winds blowing much of the smoke east out the park, even the views aren’t impacted by the fire. Many Glacier. Alisa Leddy spent nine summers working as a server at the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn in the Many Glacier Valley. “I like the Many Glacier Valley because you have some of the best day hikes in the park there,” she said. It’s also a great jumping-off point for longer, multi-day trips. “You can pretty much hike or backpack to any place in the park from there,” she said. Jordre’s favorite hike is to take the Highline Trail from Logan Pass to Granite Park Chalet. From there, a trail climbs up Swiftcurrent Pass and drops into the Many Glacier Valley. “If you come over the pass, you can see for a long distance and it’s just absolutely glorious,” she said. Many Glacier also offers canoeing and kayaking opportunities on Swiftcurrent Lake and horseback rides. “There are lots of options there,” Jordre said. While Many Glacier offers spectacular views and excellent hiking, it doesn’t typically offer solitude. The Many Glacier Campground is usually full from June though September, Leddy said, and some trails in the area can feel crowded. However, Many Glacier tends to attract different tourists than the Going-to-the-Sun Road. “You don’t get the people who are just driving through the park and stopping and taking photos,” she said. In Many Glacier, don’t miss:. • Hike to Iceberg Lake. This is one of the most popular hikes in the park for a reason. If timed correctly, visitors can see icebergs floating on the lake. The 10-mile round-trip hike departs from the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn. The Ptarmigan Tunnel was blasted through the Ptarmigan Wall in the early 1930s to create a trail that avoided the steep climbs required to travel between Many Glacier and the Belly River. The view from the tunnel is breathtaking and the tunnel itself is one of the more unique man-made features in the park. The hike is about 10 miles round-trip and departs from the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn. • Visit Many Glacier Hotel. The Many Glacier Hotel is the largest lodging facility in the park. Because there is no hotel at Two Medicine, it tends to attract fewer visitors. “Two Medicine is nice because it’s kind of off the beaten path,” Leddy said. The short road into Two Medicine dead-ends at Two Medicine Lake, a beautiful lake surrounded by mountain peaks. If you visit Two Medicine, come prepared because you won’t find much there in the way of services. The Camp Store offers some groceries and a food counter with sandwiches and breakfast items. The Two Medicine area offers some nice day hikes, as well as many longer backpacking trips, Leddy said. If you visit Two Medicine, don’t miss:. Running Eagle Falls, also known as Trick Falls, is one of the most unique waterfalls in the park. Early in the summer, when water flow is higher, the falls look like most other falls. The hike to reach the falls is easy, about half a mile. Find the trail at Red Eagle Falls parking area. • Two Medicine Camp Store. Housed in a historic chalet, the Two Medicine Camp Store offers gifts, food and drinks. As a chalet, the building once housed guests who traveled to the park via rail and then traveled from chalet to chalet via horseback. Source: www.greatfallstribune.com

Among Montana’s most enduring legacies are the names assigned to its geographic features and places found on the state map. As long as humans have inhabited Montana they have named places. While the past two centuries have changed the way people live in Montana, the names given to some rivers, mountain ranges, cities, and towns have persisted, while others have changed with time. Naming Montana explores the origins of more than 1,000 Montana place names, drawing upon the knowledge of Montana Historical Society historians and the expertise of local historians from across the state. This new publication includes both geographic features, selected historic sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, historic photographs, and maps.
