Suggested Kit Good starter yarn and needles sold on Amazon.com are Lion Brand's Wool Ease Chunky Yarn (avoid dark colors/shades when first learning to knit), and Brittany 10-inch long Single Point Birch Knitting Needles US Size 10, 10.5 or 11. Any other 10-inch long wood needles in those sizes are good as well. Try to avoid the more slippery aluminum and metal needles, and the "grippy" plastics. As a beginner, start with a needle texture that's somewhere in the middle, such as wood.
For this easy scarf, I used a long rectangular loom with 18 pegs across, but only used 8 of them so a shorter loom will work just as well. These work up so quickly.

Working women get all sorts of advice. Lean in, lean out, ask for a raise, but don't ask in the wrong way, be aggressive, but not too aggressive. We're also told to make sure not to forget about our personal lives, lest we end up foregoing families or love or travel or friendship in service of our careers. Describe a typical work day for you. (When do you wake up. When do you head to work. When do you make time for yourself to exercise or relax. What time do you go to sleep. I have two young children (five months and two years old), and while many find the unpredictable schedule of infants burdensome, it was not a surprise to me. With artisans around the globe, I often find myself on early morning Skype calls to... So, after a morning check-in with one project site or another, I head to the train. I love the train journey as a chance to clean out my emails and get computer work done at both the beginning and the end of the day. our days in the office tend to be action-packed and busy, filled with meetings with donors, potential project sites, and brand partners. We also have a close-knit team, so despite having individual desks, more often than not we find ourselves as a whole group or in pairs sitting around our central conference room table brainstorming and working together. I spend time with my children in the mornings and before bed and relish time with them on the weekends. I founded Nest at just 24, right after completing my Masters in Social Work at Washington University. After graduating, I was deciding on next steps when I realized that the perfect job for me was one I would create for myself. Over a glass of wine at my favorite wine bar, I was making a list of my strengths, interests, skills, and the opportunities I could contribute them to, when the idea for Nest began to take shape. Recognizing craft as a viable form of employment for women around the world—one that allows them to care of their children while doing something they love—I conceived of the idea to leverage craft sector development as a force for positive change. At the time, I was young and single with a supportive family, so I started Nest with a shoestring budget and an ambitious vision, and never looked back. Describe your path before landing your current job. I graduated from college (Wake Forest University in North Carolina) and then went quickly on to graduate school in Social Work. During the summer in between, I volunteered to teach yoga in India—at a Delhi-based organization that took children from the slums at age three or four and educated them through trade school. The organization taught them life and vocational skills, made them prosthetics and taught them how to use them. This trip laid a firm foundation for a career in service that was furthered by my social work education. It wasn't until the fateful glass of wine, though, that I realized I wanted to create an organization that did not yet exist. That organization would become the foundation of what Nest is today. Was there a time when you asked for more responsibilities or applied for a long shot job. How did you go about it. What was going on in your life at the time. There have been many times over the years at Nest when we applied for philanthropic grant support from foundations, or sought an ambitious partnership that seemed like perhaps a bit too aspirational. Some of our greatest success have emerged from those "long shot" asks. I would highly encourage anyone seeking an opportunity that perhaps seems like a lot of work and a long way out, to go for it. Start by taking action–there is very little downside. Was there a time when you wanted less responsibility or held off on a promotion. When I was pregnant with my children and right after their births, I had to back off from my work responsibilities in order to recover and to provide love and care to my children. This was not always easy for me, as in many ways, Nest was one of my children, too. While Nest is a part of my family, the health and happiness of my children comes first. With a tiny team, it was impossible to take a true maternity leave, but the truth is that I would not have wanted to anyway. As I have mentioned, Nest is in many ways like a child of mine, so I feel both a responsibility towards, and love for, the work that I do. The truth is I that I would miss Nest terribly if I.
